Thurrock youngsters are set to perform special curtain raisers at Revel Puck Circus big top after community workshops

YOUNG people in Thurrock are being given the opportunity to perform in a big top after learning circus skills from world-class performers.
Revel Puck Circus is bringing its Nose Dive Assembly show to Blackshots, Grays, between Thursday, 10 April 10 and Monday, 21 April for a series of shows supported by Start Thurrock and Arts Council England.
During the residency, young people from Thurrock who have been coached by some of Revel Puck's top artists will have the chance to perform a special curtain raiser ahead of one of the shows.
Start Thurrock has facilitated taster sessions for students at Harris Academy in South Ockendon, where more than 30 Year 9 students tried their hand at circus skills, and for Belhus Park Scout Group, which is also based in the town, allowing their members to give the activities a try and even work towards their Circus Skills Activity badge.
Those feeling inspired have been invited to an additional full day session at the big top where they will refine their acts and be ready to take part in the special show opener.
Naomi Burdett, Subject Coordinator of Drama at Harris Academy, said: "The students were talking about it for days after and loved the fact that they got to explore new skills in a safe environment with their friends.
"As a teacher, I loved getting to see my students try new things with such confidence and come away with new abilities.
"The students accomplished great things in a short space of time, and each found something that they were good at."

Nix Pretlove, Senior Producer at Revel Puck Circus, said: "It's a delight to open this year's season to the Thurrock community.
"They've made us feel so welcome and at home since we've arrived in Blackshots and we're excited to welcome everyone to The Revel Puck Circus during the Easter Holidays."
"It's so cool that we get to engage with and work with young people and inspire the next generation of artists and performers."
Louise Hunt, Start Thurrock Producer, added: "We've loved facilitating these sessions, and the young people have been fantastic at giving these new skills a go.
"We want to give our community a chance to not only watch a brilliant show but also experience a fantastic cultural opportunity right on their doorstep."
As well as the circus curtain-raiser, young people from local dance groups will also be performing at the shows, and backstage work experience opportunities have also been offered to local people including students from USP college.
Tickets for the shows are priced from £12, and those who book four or more tickets will be eligible for a 10% discount.
Preview show tickets on April 10 and 11 are available from £10, and if you live or work in Thurrock, you can use the code LOCALPUCK to get 50% off on those dates.
