Union launches petition for local people to oppose planned cuts at borough schools

THE GMB Union has thrown its support behind staff and teachers at Gable Hall School and Hassenbrook Academy who are taking industrial action opposing planned changed to terms and conditions proposed by the education trust about to assume control at the schools.

Under proposals recently published, it is planned to make significant job cuts and reduce the educational offer at the schools.

Long-running concerns about the changes likely to be imposed by the Mossbourne Federation when it finally succeeds the Ortu Federation in running the two secondaries (and Corringham Primary) culminated in industrial action by members of the teaching union NASUWT last week, which continues.

The GMB, which numbers school support staff among its members, has launched a petition in a bid to focus support from across the borough community.

It says: "These cuts will go right through the heart of Corringham & Stanford Le Hope. "The schools have been an integral part of these towns for years. These cuts will damage the education children in Thurrock will be able to receive by overloading teachers and cutting the job roles that provide the pastoral support that teenagers especially need!

"Not to mention the inadequate provision for children with SEND.

"We are saying no to the cuts, and that our children deserve better!"

- Save the integral jobs of support staff in Gable Hall & Hassenbrook!

- Put student wellbeing and pastoral support at the heart of any changes in the academies, and do not make the staff who are responsible for this provision redundant!

- Make sure that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Healthcare Plans are not ignored as part of these changes, and that the support staff that work with them are not made redundant through the cuts!
