TRAFFIC was held back for a couple of hours this morning as police dealt with an incdieent on the QEII bridge.

A statement from Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for someone on the bridge shortly before 5.20am today (Friday 17 May) and responded.

"Traffic was being held while we dealt with the incident."

At one point traffic was backed up on the M25 to the north and on adjoining roads, with national Highways estimating the delay would take up to an hour to clear when the crossing reopened.

At 8.30am the bridge was clear, with police saying: "The bridge is now fully open. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Police were assisted in the operation by the RNLI, whose spokesperson said: "Gravesend RNLI Lifeboats were tasked by HM Coastguard to the incident at 5.30am."
