EMERGENCY workers closed a Thurrock road this evening after a van hit a post holding up power cables.

The incident happened soon after 4pm on Muckingford Road at its junction with Blue Anchor Lane.

The cables came down and struck a large lorry coming the opposite way.

An eye witness told Thurrock Nub News: "I came past just after it happened. The van driver and the lorry driver were out of their vehicles.

"The wire had come down and it was sparking off the lorry."

Police were quickly on the scene, closing the road and diverting traffic between Chadwell St Mary and East Tilbury bus West Tilbury.

Power workers are now on the scene.
