Warning after electric bike fire in Tilbury
By Nub News Reporter 22nd Apr 2026
FIREFIGHTERS have issued safety advice after an electric bike caused a fire at a house in Tilbury.
The bike was being stored in a downstairs bedroom at the terraced property in Moore Avenue when it caught fire around noon yesterday (Tuesday, 21 April). A smoke alarm alerted the occupant to the fire. and crews from Orsett and Grays attended.
Crew Manager Dan Tyler said: "The occupant dragged the bike out of the house, but she was very lucky. If the battery had been outside the bike frame, we believe the fire would have been far more severe.
"When it comes to e-bikes and e-scooters, this incident highlights the importance of safe storage, charging and battery care."
- Consider storing your e-bike or e-scooter in a shed or garage, and install a heat or smoke alarm
- Do not leave it on charge while you are asleep or out of your property
- Always use a charger approved by the manufacturer
- If you spot any signs of wear or damage to the battery or charger, get a replacement from a reputable supplier
- In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 999 - lithium-ion batteries can explode and will release toxic gases
Crews extinguished the fire and cleared the smoke, leaving the scene at 12.48pm.
