Warning and safety tips issued after crews fought borough field fire for several hours

FOLLOWING a field fire in East Tilbury, which took crews of firefighters from six stations several hours to contain, Essex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning and a plea to people to take care what they discard in rural areas.
The fire, off Princess Margaret Road, began around 10.30am and local residents nearby were urged to shut doors and windows because of smoke that drifted over homes.
Crews used beaters, backpack sprayers, an off road vehicle and a drone camera to tackle the fire which covered two hectares.
Firefighters finally extinguished the flames around 3pm, but crews remained on scene for some time to damp down.

Glass bottles were found at the scene and are a reminder of how discarded rubbish can cause fires in dry and hot conditions.
Station Manager Steve Kirkham said: "If you are out and about please take your rubbish home with you. Broken glass can easily start a fire in dry conditions.
"Please do enjoy yourselves in the nice weather but look after the countryside too."
The service has issued tips to prevent wildfires:
✅ Take your litter home
✅ Dispose of cigarettes properly—never throw them on the ground or out of car windows
✅ Remove glass from direct sunlight
✅ Avoid campfires or barbecues unless in designated safe areas
✅ Skip having a bonfire during dry spells—or follow bonfire safety advice
✅ Talk to children about the dangers of fire and keep matches/lighters out of reach
