Winter Welcome brings creativity and community spirit to Grays

By Alexandra Godfree   20th Dec 2025

ON Thursday, 18 December, Grays Shopping Centre was filled with the warmth of creativity and community at Winter Welcome, a celebration produced by Thurrock-based arts organisation Together Productions in collaboration with Welcome to the UK.

The event brought together residents, local artists, and visitors, including Thurrock's Deputy Mayor, Cllr Steve Liddiard, for an afternoon filled with art, conversation, music and food.

Guests were invited to explore a range of visual arts activities and games, creating a lively, hands-on experience for all ages.

The day also offered a culinary treat, with delicious food prepared by members of the Welcome to the UK community, highlighting Thurrock's rich diversity and welcoming spirit.

A highlight of the event was the 'Creating Home' art exhibition by the Together Create Visual Arts Collective, developed in collaboration with artists Marsha Ashley and Salina Jane.

The exhibition offered a powerful reflection on community, belonging, and the personal stories that shape our sense of home.

The festivities concluded with joyful participatory singing led by Ashley Beauchamp and members of the Thames Opera Company, who taught guests a number of songs from around the globe, including some festive favourites.

Adding an extra element of surprise, shoppers in Grays Shopping Centre were treated to a pop-up performance, delighting the public with an unexpected burst of song.

Alexandra Godfree, Head of Programmes at Together Productions, said: 'Our first Winter Welcome has been a joyful celebration of community and creativity. Through singing, shared food, conversation and art, people have come together to create special memories and connections that will last throughout the festive season and beyond.'

Together Create brings people together across Thurrock to create art and songs about the things they care about.

The programme is led by Together Productions, produced in collaboration with Welcome to the UK in Grays, Lansdowne Primary Academy in Tilbury and the wider community, and is supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.

The programme will be welcoming new members in 2026 with weekly arts and singing sessions open to all ages - no experience required. More details can be found on Together Productions' website.
