Would-be care thieves nabbed after residents raise alert

TWO men have been arrested by officers responding to concerns about people trying to open car doors in Fobbing.

Police were called by a resident shortly after 2.30am today (Wednesday, 18 March) who said two people dressed in dark coloured clothing had been seen trying the door handles of cars in Wharf Road.

Officers were on the scene less than 10 minutes later and, following a search of the area, detained two people who had been seen in a car.

A 25 year-old man and a 24 year-old man, both of no fixed address, have been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. The 25 year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle. They are both currently in custody.

The car has subsequently been identified as having been stolen from an address in Basildon.
