THREE of Thurrock's care-experienced young people recently led a powerful and moving Power of Participation workshop for foster carers, sharing their personal journeys through the care system.

The session, attended by foster carers, fostering management, Participation and Engagement Officers, and a Care Experienced Personal Advisor, focused on what it's really like to come into foster care. 

The young people, who are part of the Young Voices group, spoke openly about what helped them feel at home in a new family, and what didn't work so well. Carers had the opportunity to ask questions directly, leading to honest and reflective conversations.

Together, the group explored:

• How carers, social workers, and young people can work together more effectively
• How to improve communication across the fostering journey
• How small changes can make a big difference when a young person moves into a foster home

One foster carer described the session as "thought-provoking and engaging," adding: "My eyes were opened and my ears wide open. Thank you young people for being present and helping me to understand you all."

Another carer praised the workshop for its insight: "It provided more feedback on how to approach a new placement and identify how each child is different. What works with one child may not work with another."

The young people were also thanked by carers for "opening their hearts" and helping them better understand the emotional experience of entering care.

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Community Safety, said: "This workshop is a brilliant example of the type of support and guidance we provide to all of our amazing foster carers. By getting our young people to lead the session we can help to create real change.
