SCHOOLCHILDREN and college students in Thurrock are set to remain at home until at least March after the government announced this afternoon "it will not be possible" to reopen schools in England after the half-term break next month.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a final decision would depend on meeting vaccination targets and schools would get two weeks' notice but it was now anticipated that schools would not open their doors for young people other than those who are vulnerable or children of key workers until 8 March.

A CALL that went out for more volunteers to help out at Thurrock's two Covid-19 vacination centres has proved successful with a significant number of local people coming forward.
The two centres at Chadwell and Stifford Clays medical centres are open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week and they are meeting a big demand for vaccinations from across the borough.

THURROCK Council has released its commemorative video to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The film is introduced by borough Mayor Cllr Terry Piccolo and features children from several local schools as well as other civic contributors.

WITH major questions hanging over the overspends and management of major projects in the borough including the A13 widening project and the regeneration of Stanford rail stations, Thurrock Council has refused to comment on reports that senior officers connected with those and other major infrastructure projects in the council are leaving.
Thurrock Nub News is aware that a number of senior officers, including Anna Eastgate, the assistant director with responsibility for the Lower Thames Crossing and Transport Infrastructure Projects including the A13 and Stanford Rail Station, are leaving the authority.

A MAJOR new contract has been signed at the Port of Tilbury which will include the creation of a new multimillion pound processing plant to wash and grade aggregate brought from Cornwall for supply to customers across the South East.
The deal is a result of a partnership between the port and Walsh, the construction, demolition and excavation waste-based transport company.

A LEADING Thurrock councillor has called on the government's housing minister to mount a public inquiry into two controversial applications approved by the authority's planning committee.
Cllr Mark Coxshall, Thurrock Council's Conservative cabinet portfolio holder for regeneration, wants minister Robert Jenrick to intervene following approval for housing schemes on Little Thurrock Marshes and on a triangular plot of land near Palmer's College adjacent to Woodview.

A THURROCK Conservative councillor says she is leading the fight against a controversial planned housing development in her ward - and has criticised political rivals for making capital out of the situation.
Chafford Hundred councillor Abbie Akinbohun, who defected from Labour to the Tories last year says she is at the forefront of opposition to the plan for 344 new homes on land to the rear of the Bannatynes fitness centre on Howard Road.

IN the wake of a recent Thurrock Nub News report, the Environment Agency says it will be paying a visit to a controversial industrial site in the borough - to remind its operators of their responsibilities.
Last week we reported on an early morning blaze at the site, which Squibb later said was trees being burnt.

RESIDENTS in the Stanford-le-Hope and East Tilbury areas have continued to raise concerns about a lack of action to stop four wheel drive vehicles and motorbikes causing problems in a rural community park.
It has even been claimed it is 'only a matter of time' until there is a serious accident or a death.
