WHILE Covid lockdown has put paid to many fundraising efforts at Christmas a South Ockendon family are hoping a Just Giving page will help them raise cash for Havens Hospice.

Kelly Hirst and her family on Eden Green just off Afton Drive in South Ockendon have mounted a display of inflatables and Christmas lights and invited passers-by to donate to the hospices, but that has really been curtailed because of the restrictions.

Thurrock tops the Covid chart

THURROCK hit an unwanted landmark today (Monday, 21 December) when the latest figures show it has England's fastest-growing Covid-19 infection rate.

Following the weekend's decision to move the borough, along with swathes of London and South east England into the new ultra-restrictive Tier Four, because of a coronavirus mutation which may be up to 70% more contagious the infection rate in the borough has been recorded at 1,056.0 cases per 100,000 people. This is up from 387.2 per 100,000 in the seven days to December 9.

RESIDENTS in the east of the borough may soon be able to benefit from a new 'quiet garden' which Thurrock Council has agreed to create thanks to the lobbying of a local councillor.

Cllr Shane Ralph, who represents the Stanford East and Corringham Town ward has announced that the authority has agreed to convert an open space into a sheltered garden.

THE relationship between young and old in Thurrock has been crystalised by youngsters from a local nursery and older people's housing complex in Stifford Clays, which has managed to transcend every obstacle Covid-19 could put in front of it.

Two Little Birds Pre-school is based in Chestnut Avenue in in Grays and has been building a relationship with the residents of Elizabeth Gardens.

AFTER reports that thousands of people have left the areas newly classified as Tier Four so they can be with family members at Christmas, Essex Police has warned its officers will be imposing the government's legislation.

And it has been announced that British Transport Police will deploy additional officers to check people travelling by train.
