Late despair at East Thurrock United
Late despair at East Thurrock United

THERE was joy in equal measure for the borough's two Isthmian North sides in action today (Saturday, 6 November) but more disappointment for supports of East Thurrock United who succumbed to another Premier Division defeat as visitors Leatherhead nicked two late goals at Rookery Hill.

Aveley have moved into the play-off zone in the North Division after beating Basildon United 3-1.

Harry Gibbs got the Millers show on the road with a 31st minute goal.

The lead lasted until 72 minutes when Basildon's Nathan Fuma put the Bees level but with 11 minutes to go Manny Ogunrinde restored the Avelely lead and then netted his second a minute from time to seal the win.

The only downside was the late dismissal of substitute Harry Donovan who was sent off in the last minute, just 11 minutes of coming off the bench.

Two goals in three minutes were enough to give Tilbury caretaker manager Luke Wilson a winning start at home to Coggeshall.

Roman Campbell continued his recent run of goals with the 3st minute opener and Oliver Spooner added a second three minutes later.

They were the only goals of the game as Dockers ran out 2-0 winners.

Grays Athletic were denied the chance to get nearer the leaders Canvey when their match at barking was called off, reportedly because the home side had inadequate medical facilities that were highlighted at a pre-match inspection.

The woes go on for East Thurrock though as they suffered their sixth successive league defeat.

It looked like the Rocks might get a point against Leatherhead, who arrived at Rookery Hill as the division's bottom club with just one previous win but a brace from Arthur Aderi in the 83rd and 90th minute broke home hearts.
