TRIBUTE was paid to a popular supporter of Tilbury FC and a much-loved member of the town community who has passed away.

The death was announced this morning of Charlie Lawrence, just hours before the Dockers' home match with Maldon & Tiptree – and before the kick-off players, officials and the crowd took part in a minute's applause to acknowledge his contribution to Tilbury.

A club statement said: "The club would like to send its deepest condolences to the family, friends and everyone that knew Charlie Lawrence who sadly passed away on 3rd January 2026.

"Charlie was a character at the club and had followed Tilbury for several years. Charlie was a big part of the whole community and will be sadly missed by many."

On social media dozens of people have paid tribute to Charlie, who is remembered with great fondness for his work supporting young people across the local community.

In July 2023 Charlie was added to the Thurrock Mayor's Roll of Honour for his work in Tilbury - and later that year had the privilege of switching on the town's Christmas lights.
