Folkestone Invicta 0, Aveley 1
AVELEY pulled off an exceptional result at Isthmian Premier runaway leaders Folkstone on Tuesday (6 January) evening.
Millers extended their unbeaten run of league games dating back to 15 September, ironically when they were beaten 5-2 at home by Folkestone, thanks a first half goal from Ollie Peters.
On a chilly night down in Kent, the first half was an incredibly tight affair with neither team really having clear cut chances.
Just before half time Peters received the ball on the edge of the area and curled an effort across the keeper and in off the left-hand post for his 12th goal of the season so far.
The hosts came out firing as expected, forward Jake Hutchinson saw his close-range effort hit the crossbar inside two minutes of the restart.
On-loan Louie Kudiabor replaced George Saunders for his Millers debut five minutes into the second half as the league leaders continued to put balls in the Aveley box, but Millers stayed strong.
Matty Johnson, on his first start for the club since 2009, saw him boss the midfield as Aveley continued to soak up pressure from Folkestone.
Millers goalkeeper Joe Wright pulled off a worldie of a save by denying Folkestone substitute Jack Jebb with five minutes to go.
Five minutes were added on time and in the final minute the hosts hit the crossbar for the second time, this time a 35-yard rocket from Joel Odeniran cracked the crossbar.
But Aveley stood strong to keep a clean sheet, and stop Folkestone scoring for the first time in their 34 games so far this season, collecting a brilliant three points on the road.
Millers are quickly back in action at Cray on Friday.
