AFTER a delayed beginning to the season because of a RFU directive to put back the start of competitive matches because of the condition of pitches following summer heatwaves, three Borough sides will be starting their league campaigns today (Saturday, 26 September).

Thurrock will take both first and second senior men's sides to Latton Park to take on Harlow. Both matches start at 3pm, with the Firsts' game screened on the club's YouTube channel.

For the Firsts it marks a return to Anglia 2 for the first time since the 2023/24 season, following last season's promotion. For seconds it is an opening encounter in the Group 1 Automotive Essex Merit League Division One.

Twenty-nine of the 36 players selected to travel are homegrown Thurrock players, a matter of particular pride for the Oakfield club.

Thurrock Firsts' home season begins next weekend when they entertain Cheshunt and the seconds will also be at home, with a borough derby against Pegasus Palmerians, who will open their competitive season in the clash at Oakfield.

Stanford-le-Hope begin their London & SE Division Counties One Essex season today with a trip to Old Brentwoods, with their home campaign at the Rec starting next weekend when Eton Manor Seconds visit.

Thames' season in the Group 1 Automotive Essex Merit League Division One also begins next weekend with a trip to Bancroft.

Thurrock Ladies, the T-Birds, who are continuing to rebuild and regroup, open their season tomorrow with a tough-looking trip to Bath in the Women's Championship South.
