We are holding an open day for anybody that has an interest in our industrial past. In the mid 20th Century Thames Board Mills had the largest factory of its kind in the UK. They employed around 3,500 people at is peek, many from Thurrock who fondly remember it.
They produced cardboard and fibreboard for packaging, including cardboard for Kellogg's Cornflakes. They had a large sports building, still standing today. If you visit the sports section of the Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre there are many sporting photos showing TBM football, rugby, cricket, netball, bowls and the famous Thames Board Mills Raiders, a highly successful, historic British baseball team founded in 1937 by Jimmy McQuade at the Thames Board Mills paper factory in Purfleet, Essex.
Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre hold the largest collect of memorabilia they acquired when the firm finally closed. Just recently they acquired the Portland Stone sculptured panel what was on their head office.
It is a chance for ex Thames Board mills employees to get together and chat about the past.
Teas, coffee, refreshments are available.
