By Neil Speight 2nd Jun 2020

FOUR teams of firefighters from Thurrock successfully tackled a significant blaze at a rural scrapyard which has left a large plume of smoke drifting over parts of the borough.

The started around 5.30om at the EMR Scrapyard on Station Road, just outside East Tilbury.

Lorry drivers who were waiting to deliver scrap to the site report hearing a large explosion then smoke began to rise from the scrapyard.

Thurrock Nub News visited the scene. You can see one of the reports here.

A statement from Essex County Fire and Rescue, which sent teams from Grays, Orsett and Corringham to the blaze, said: "Firefighters were called to what was initially reported as a small fire in Station Road, East Tilbury today at 6.08pm.

"The first crew to arrive found an industrial building alight and requested more support as they tackled a fire in a ground floor plant room.

"The electricity supply was isolated and the energy company has been contacted."

Just before 8pm the service reported: "The fire has been extinguished but two crews will remain at the scene to make sure it does not restart.

"The cause has been recorded as accidental."
