MANY tributes have been paid to a Thurrock woman who has retired after serving her local community for more than 27 years.

Tuesday, 31 March was the last day at work at Stanford-le-Hope library for manager and supervisor Jill O'connor - but because of the coronavirus clampdown she had to say goodbye from home.

Nevertheless, Jill's post on social media drew a big following and dozens of local people expressed their best wishes and thanks for her work for the community.

Jill said: "So today after 27 and a half years I have finally retired as Manager/Supervisor of Stanford-le-Hope Library.

"When I announced my intention to retire back in December I could never in my wildest dreams have imagined my final day being one where libraries across the country and indeed the world are closed due to this terrible virus.

"I have had a fantastic time working at the library and I have been lucky to have known such wonderful Stanford and Corringham families throughout the years.

"When this is all over I will still have to keep coming in and lurking around the library as I will miss them all so much.

"I have had great colleagues over the years and none more so than the lovely Cindy whose commitment to making sure our elderly customers get the books etc they need knows no bounds.

"Lots of love to all customers and the other Thurrock Library staff. Keep your chins up everyone."
