THE mayor of Thurrock has been at the forefront of a residents' campaign, joining them in a battle against a planned major quarrying development in the east of the borough.

Campaigners fear the development will have a wide impact on the local environment for many years, a view shared by Mayor Cllr Terry Piccolo who has supported an application for the council to host an online petition where people can record their objections and fears.

The development would see the loss of agricultural land around Walton Hall Farm.

It will see an expansion from the existing Orsett Quarry into adjoining land and the erection of a processing plant and ancillary activities, importation and treatment of reclamation material.

Cllr Picollo, whose Stanford West ward borders on the land that could be devoured by the proposal, says: "As the local councillor I share the residents' concerns and will assist them any way I can to get their views in front of the right people."
