Time to say goodbye to fire station building

By Neil Speight 10th Jan 2021

THE days of Tilbury's former fire station look numbered after an application to knock it down was submitted to Thurrock Council.

The iconic local building, which became a community resource when the fire service moved house and up until recently was home to a martial arts studio, is located on Civic Square.

Ancillary structures on the site consist of two brick buildings, a 12.5m high steel training tower and associated hard standing. In addition there is an abandoned fuel tank, fuel line and pump on the site.

The application proposes demolition of the buildings and the training tower will be removed from site and used elsewhere. The fuel line, tank and pump will be removed.

A common pipistrelle bat has been seen emerging from the building during survey work so a licence from Natural England will be required to allow the works.

The demolition is being undertaken, says the applicant - Nottingham-based DLP Planning which is acting on behalf of site owners Thurock Council - to facilitate the redevelopment of the site which is earmarked for a new integrated medical centre.

The application for approval to demolish the fire station can be found here.
