Totem plan as controversial site needs to be signposted more say developers

THE developers of a hugely controversial warehouse and distribution site in Thurrock, which now dominates its surrounds, have gone back to Thurrock Council asking to add to the impact on the local area by putting up new signs.

SEGRO say they require the new signage, including two 25 foot high roadside totems, at their facility in Aveley to 'reinforce their brand' and ensure the new facility within the surrounding vicinity. Large signs will go up on the side of the building.

They add: "The signage is in keeping with SERGRO's brand and is in keeping with the commercial character of the surrounding area. The signage will not lead to unacceptable impacts on either amenity or public safety, but rather enhance the facility's operation with wayfinding for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles."

Residents fiercely opposed the planning permission for the site when it was first applied for but lost their battle and since then claim their lives have been blighted by the construction process.

The company has breached several planning permissions and construction crews have worked through through the night and over weekend, keeping residents away and disturbing their rest and relaxation time.

Numerous complaints have been made to Thurrock Council but its planning enforcement team has effectively turned a blind eye to the problem, refusing to to take direct action and enforce either injunctions or introduce stop orders.

Instead the council says it is preparing a case for a breach of planning regulations, but it is likely that will not happen until after the build in completed and comes with a fine that residents have described as a slap on the wrist after the event.

The council has declined to answer questions from Thurrock Nub News, and ward councillors, about the course of action it has chosen to take.
