THE Queen Elizabeth II bridge at Dartford celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend.

Built at a cost of £120m and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in October 1991 it was the first bridge to be built at an entirely new location along the river Thames for more than 50 years. For a short time it was also the longest single span bridge in Europe measuring over 2,872 metres long.

Jamie Hanks, Straddle Carrier Driver at the Port of Tilbury.

IN a move to help recruit new members to the team at Port of Tilbury, a new video has been released today (Thursday, 21 October) showing how straddle carrier drivers are a vital part of the operations at the docks' London Container Terminal.

The port has issued the new 'behind the scenes video' which hears from their straddle drivers and trainers about their experiences of driving these 55ft high, 70 tonne machines and showcases the opportunities for people to join to port in this very unusual driving role.

AMONG events taking place in Thurrock this weekend will be a celebration of Black History month at Tilbury's cruise terminal.

From 11am to 3pm on Saturday artist EVEWRIGHT, the creator of the Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories – a site-specific art installation, comprised of images, documents, audio recordings and memorabilia adorning the bridge that passengers of the Empire Windrush first walked across as they entered Britain in 1948 – will be on site.

Sir Thomas held his ground despite Queen Caroline's demands

In the latest of her features reflecting on historical gems from Thurrock and wider Essex, Nub News correspondent Sue Yates (the chair of Thurrock Historical Society) tells the story of a day never to be forgotten by an otherwise dull man who stood his ground on his King's command and kept a Queen at bay.

SIR Thomas Barrett-Lennard of Belhus, Aveley, was born on 6 January 1762 and was Lord Dacre's natural son by Elizabeth FitzThomas. Because of his illegitimacy he could not inherit the title of Lord Dacre but was made a baronet in his own right in 1801. Thomas lived a long, if uneventful life - except for one day.
