THURROCK Council has issued more details of its bus shelter improvement programme.

First reported on Thurrock Nub News in April the council plans to spend up to £1.2 million on the programme.

The council has now confirmed that work is now underway installing new bus shelters as older structures make way for more modern ones at bus stops across the borough.

a statement says: "Currently the first 46 bus shelters are in the process of being installed and later in the year the project will move on to replace larger shelters, some of which will feature real time bus arrival information and an electronic advertising panel."

Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Cllr Ben Maney, said: "These new shelters provide better seating and lighting for the borough's bus users as well as being neater and less obtrusive on our pedestrian walkways.

"This is the first phase of a £1.2m bus shelter replacement and maintenance scheme which will improve the look of the borough and hopefully encourage more residents to use public transport.

"The new bus stops include one in Horndon on the Hill which has been especially designed to be in keeping with the conservation area it is situated in."
