'Extremely worrying' surge of covid in Thurrock
THE leader of Thurrock Council has spoken of the 'extremely worrying' surge in cases of Covid-19 in the borough.
In his weekly message to resident Cllr Rob Gledhill says: "While nationally infection rates have decreased, here in Thurrock the rate of infection has increased again for the fourth week in a row, something which is extremely worrying.
"There are now more than twice as many people testing positive for Covid-19 in Thurrock as there were at the start of October.
"I cannot stress how important the vaccine is to preventing the spread of Covid-19, saving lives and preventing us from having to endure more restrictive measures as we have in the past.
"That is why it is vital that all those eligible take up the offer of the vaccine, those that are due for a top up get theirs and younger people do not let false confidence about how the virus will affect them stop them from getting the vaccine.
"Initially take up of the vaccine was very good but we have seen that take up dwindle over time. Whereas over 90% of the over 50s have had both doses, the rates among the younger age groups are far lower with as few as four out of 10 eligible 16 and 17 year-olds getting the extra protection the vaccine promises.
"By taking up the offer of the vaccine you are not only protecting yourselves from the risk that you could end up with symptoms that last for months if it becomes long-covid, you are also doing your part to help break the chain of transmission and protect family, friends and your community.
"Getting a vaccine could not be easier. You can get a walk-in or booked appointment at any one of the nearby vaccine centres. They are available seven days a week and the vaccine itself takes just minutes to administer.
"It is important to remember that even after you have been given your full dose of the vaccine you are not immune to the virus, although you are significantly less likely to be hospitalised if you contract it.
"The same is true of the booster vaccine. As with many vaccinations the protection offered can wane over time but by taking the time to get a booster you can enjoy continued protection throughout the cold autumn and winter seasons, when respiratory diseases most frequently thrive. There is more information about how to arrange your booster below.
"The vaccine is something which will protect you and help you to, in turn, protect others. If you need to get either a first, second or booster dose do not delay, make your appointment now or find a walk-in centre this weekend."
