THURROCK Council's care leavers recently enjoyed a series of events in celebration of National Care Leavers' Month.
A range of social activities and inspiring sessions were organised for the young people, including a bonfire and outdoor Cinema Night, a staff versus young people football tournament, bowling, an aftercare celebration, and a cultural diversity event celebrating the richness of different cultures across the borough care leaver population.
The aftercare celebration event was supported by Desi Indian Dining Club in Grays, who provided food.
Dedicated aftercare workers were also on hand to provide support, cooking homemade meals and providing music to make the evening memorable.
Alongside these celebrations, the Inspire Employability and Skills team delivered an inspiring week of skill-building activities designed to empower and support care leavers as they take their next steps towards independence.
These included accredited courses in Blow-Drying, Food Hygiene, and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, as well as "Meet the NHS" and "Meet a Business Advisor" sessions.
Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Community Safety, said: "Care leavers deserve every opportunity to thrive, and I'm proud of the incredible work our teams have done to make this month special.
"From fun, inclusive events to practical skills training, these activities show our commitment to helping young people build confidence, independence, and a bright future."
The theme for Care Leavers' Month in November 2025 is "Rising as Me: Overcoming challenges, transforming, and finding your identity."
It aims to celebrate the experiences and achievements of young people who have been in care, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face.
This is the first year that Care Leavers' Month will be a full month, rather than a week, to allow for more in-depth conversation and celebration.
