STAFF, users and supporters of the Thameside Complex in Grays have been celebrating winning an award which names the theatre and arts venue as the best in Essex.

The accolade was given via the Essex 'Muddy Stiletto' regional awards.

Muddy Stilettos is an award-winning website that talks to 'cosmopolitan, fun-loving, urbane women living outside London', helping them to get more from where they live.

The Essex awards have now been issued and the Thameside Theatre was revealed as the best theatre/arts venue in the county.

A spokesperson for the Thameside, which remains under threat of closure by cash-strapped Thurrock Council, said: "This is amazing recognition for our theatre at the heart of our community.

"A massive thank you to you all for voting for us and showing the whole of Essex how important the Thameside is to us all.

"Against tough competition like the Colchester, Brentwood and Mercury Theatres and the Colchester Arts Centre we won!

"The Thameside will now be put through to the next round of the UK Competition and will be judged by a panel of specialists. Congratulations to everyone and let's celebrate and continue to fight to #saveyourthameside

"We must save the Thameside from closure by Thurrock Council, our arts and cultural hub at the heart of our community - a safe space where everyone is welcome."
