AS we enjoy something of an Indian summer and more hot dry days on the back of a very warm few months, Essex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning and to advice to residents in the wake of a stubble fire in the boriugh.

Three crews of borough-based firefighters tackled the four acre blaze in a field of stubble adjacent to Biggin Lane near Chadwell St Mary on Tuesday (15 September).

Following the incident, which was quickly controlled by crews using a number of backpack sprayers, beaters and hose reel jets as they surrounded the fire, the service has warned [people they need to take extra care.

A statement said: "In dry, hot weather like today, it is especially important that people take extra care to reduce the risk of fires. Here is our countryside fire safety advice:

• Avoid open fires in the countryside. Always have them in safe, designated areas

• Put out cigarettes and other smoking materials properly before you leave your vehicle

• Don't leave bottles or glass in woodlands. Sunlight shining through glass can start a fire. Take them home or put them in a waste or recycling bin

• If you see a fire in the countryside, report it immediately

• Don't attempt to tackle fires that can't be put out with a bucket of water – leave the area as soon as possible

• Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows – they could start a fire and endanger lives.
