A THURROCK councillor says 'enough is enough' and has called on the local authority to do more to stop lorries dropping mud and debris on local roads - and for a general clean-up of signage.
Residents in East Tilbury and Linford have inundated ward councillor Fraser Massey with complaints about the state of the roads and in turn he has taken up the issue with Thurrock Council.
However, he says that he feels the council is not looking into the root cause of the issues.
He says: "I am getting bombarded with complaints, all of the roads in the region are in a terrible state with mud on them.
"We regularly see lorries going through the village dropping mud and breaching the rules and regulations.
"A resident had filmed one of the lorries but this evidence has not been used.
"Officers did attend one site and said that the company were sweeping the roads afterwards, but that's not good enough. Sweeping the roads should be a last resort. There should be better cleaning on the entrance and exits and these lorries should not leave site caked in mud - and the loads should be secured and covered.
"We have produced hard evidence but there is no enforcement.
"There are lorries coming off the A13 road widening scheme dropping mud all over local roads, and at the council's own tip on Buckingham Hill Road, lorries are coming from there caked in mud and leaving it on the roads. The washing is simply not sufficient.
Many other residents have complained and raised the issue on social media, among them can driver Jason Alston who posted a picture of his filthy cab saying: "I left London with a clean cab. Until I got to Buckingham Hill Road.
"Then not only was I driving on roads like chocolate but I got stuck behind a Walsh lorry.
"My cab now looks like this. This company have ruined East tilbury and Linford. So much so, I want to move away."
Cllr Massey says it's not just the road surfaces that are filthy and dangerous, but the local road signage is smothered in muck.
"The signs, including safety warnings, are almost unreadable and covered in mud. They can't have been cleaned for an age.
"Something has to be done about this before it leads to a severe accident"
