A JOINT operation involving armed police, many other police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews was concluded early this afternoon.

The arrest came after an operation lasting more than five hours.

A police statement says: "A man has been arrested following an incident in Grays today Friday 26 June.

"We had been called to an address in Sleeper Farm Road at around 8.45am following concerns for welfare for a man.

"Officers attended and at 2.20pm he was safely detained without injury.

"He remains in custody.

"If anyone have any information or CCTV please call us on 101 quoting incident 262 of 26 June, you can also report it online, via this link."

During the morning Thurrock Nub News reported regularly as the teams of emergency service personnel gathered around Orsett Heath. They were held there for several hours before the operation moved into gear just after midday.

The epicentre of the operation was Handley House, where one of the apartments was raided and at least one person taken away by officers. Handley House contains a number of supported living flats.

Ten police cars, other unmarked police cars, three fire engines and several ambulances and paramedic vehicles had gathered on the junction of Brentwood Road and Heath Road.

No official statement has been issued but it appears the area is a holding operation for something that might develop elsewhere.

The police officer in charge assured local residents on the Heath they were in no danger.

There has still been no official statement from the emergency services about the incident.
