THREE teenagers have been arrested after a man reported an armed attempt to steal his car at Lakeside last night (Saturday, 10 August).

Police received a 999 call shortly after 7.30pm after the man had been confronted while he was in his vehicle outside Hollywood Bowl.

He was threatened by the group with what was believed to be a knife and another weapon.

The victim was able to quickly drive away from the scene and get to a place of safety to make the 999 call.

A number of police units, including armed officers, were sent to the area with detailed descriptions of the suspects having been given by the victim.

Three people of interest was quickly identified and began being followed by officers. They then attempted to run off but were tracked and caught by officers and arrested.

While the trio were being searched, a knife and a black-handled hammer were seized.

All three people, boys aged 17, 17 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

At this stage, they remain in custody.

Detective Inspector Steve Baker is leading the investigation.

He said: "From the moment the 999 call was received in our control room, teams from across the force were sent to the scene to find those believe to be responsible.

"Very much thanks to the detailed descriptions of the suspects, we were able to quickly identify those believed to be responsible and ensure they were arrested as quickly as possible.

"In doing that, we've also taken two dangerous weapons off the streets – and they'll be destroyed."

DI Baker added: "We know it is so important not only to react as we did yesterday evening when reports of a weapon being seen come in, but we are also proactive in our approach to tackling knife crime.

"That approach is working in Essex and it's driving down knife crime, but one incident is always one too many and we'll continue to work with our partners across all sectors, including in local authorities and through the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit."
