POPULAR physical activity competition, Beat the Street, is set to return to Thurrock, this time taking place across East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Horndon on the Hill, and Corringham.

Beat the Street, an interactive walking, cycling, running and wheeling competition, will soon turn the areas of East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Horndon on the Hill, and Corringham into a free initiative where local residents can win prizes for clocking up active travel miles!

Beat the Street Eastern Thurrock will take place from Wednesday, 23 September to Wednesday, 4 November following a successful game nearby in Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary earlier this summer, where 2,415 participants signed up and together travelled 9,172 miles.

Forty beeping and flashing sensors called 'Beat Boxes' will be placed on lampposts around the area for the duration of the six-week game. Participating primary schools will provide their pupils with a player pack containing a map and a card for the child and an accompanying adult. The wider community can pick up a game card from a distribution point listed at www.beatthestreet.me/ or players aged 13 or more can use the free Beat the Street app.

Once the game starts on 23 September, players then travel between the Beat Boxes scoring points with their cards or phones as they go. The further players travel, the more points they score for their school, community, charity, or workplace team. Each week is themed with different activities to help participants get the most out of their Beat the Street experience.

Beat the Street Eastern Thurrock is being delivered by Intelligent Health in partnership with, and funded by, Thurrock Council, Active Essex and the National Lottery via Sport England.

Cllr Robert Willoughby, cabinet member at Thurrock Council for Adult Health and Housing Services, said: "The recent Beat the Street game that took place across Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary really showed how easy it is to get active outside.

"Following its success, we're delighted to extend the opportunity to residents of East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Horndon on the Hill, and Corringham so they can see if they can travel even further! There are leaderboards for schools, community groups and total and average points leaderboards so teams of all sizes can be in with a chance of winning prizes."
