A SCHEME to build nine new bungalows in Orsett has been submitted to Thurrock Council, with developers saying the homes would help meet demand from downsizers, smaller households and residents seeking single-storey living.

Chigwell Developments wants to build the properties on paddock land off High Road, next to an existing terrace of bungalows at numbers 110 to 116.

The site is part of land currently used for equestrian purposes and backs onto a strip of woodland along its northern boundary. Developers have stressed the neighbouring stable land is not included in the application and would remain untouched.

If approved, the development would extend the existing ribbon of housing along High Road, with nine two and three-bedroom bungalows arranged around a new internal access road. Each home would have its own parking space, while visitor bays, street trees and additional landscaping are also proposed.

In planning documents, Chigwell Developments said the scheme had been "carefully designed" to provide much-needed housing while remaining in keeping with the character of the area.

The developer said: "The proposed development has been carefully designed to provide much-needed high-quality homes that will help meet local housing demand, particularly for smaller households, downsizers and those with mobility issues seeking single-storey accommodation within the local area.

"Keeping the homes single storey whilst continuing the existing edge of settlement ribbon development pattern has also helped ensure the proposals are in keeping with the character of the area."

The application also promises a 10 per cent biodiversity net gain, alongside the retention and enhancement of most of the existing roadside hedgerow.

Developers argue the shared access road would avoid the need for nine separate dropped kerbs and help preserve the established frontage.

Planning consultants JCN Design and Planning add the bungalows have been designed to reflect the area's post-war housing character. Features including hipped roofs, chimneys and projecting porches would create a consistent appearance, while different brick colours, roof tiles and front doors would ensure each property has its own identity.

The homes would also be set back from the woodland edge to protect tree roots and maintain views towards the trees from High Road.
