Bid to save badgers ends in sadness

By Neil Speight 2nd Mar 2021

A FIGHT to save the lives of two badgers who became trapped in a sewer has ended in sadness at Orsett's South Essex Animal Wildlife Hospital.

The two animals were recovered from the smelly depths by a worker at the hospital, who is also a member of the regional Badger Rescue group.

A spokesperson at the hospital said: "Our friends from the Badger Group rescued two badgers from a sewer that were covered in human waste.

"The badgers had clearly been trapped for several days and they arrived collapsed, dehydrated, emaciated and suffering badly from hypothermia."

Sadly, the male of the pair succumbed at the weekend from injuries and malnourishment but hopes were high that the female would survive at the rescue centre founded by Sue Schwar.

The hospital initially reported: "The female is still with us and although much improved she is so weak she only moves slightly before collapsing. Sue has been trying to get her to feed but the badger has been very reluctant. Our patient has pulled out her drip line which is not helpful."

And sadly the optimism has proved misplaced and the hospital has reported: "We are heartbroken to have to update everyone that the female badger from the sewer has succumbed to her condition and passed away, likely due to organ failure.

"We worked so hard on her but had strong doubts that she would recover from her ordeal. We are so grateful for everyone's support and encouragement."

If you would like to support the work of the hospital and help it in its attempt to save the thousands of animals who pass through its door every year, you can make a donation via its website here.
