EAST Thurrock MP Stephen Metcalfe today (Wednesday, 29 March) sought recognition for the recently approved Thames Freeport when he spoke in the House of Commons.

Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions, the South Basildon & East Thurrock MP questionned Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab about the new Freeport.

He said: "The Thames Freeport was recently given the final go-ahead to become fully operational, creating thousands of jobs and attracting millions in inward investment.

"Will my right honourable friend (Mr Raab) join me in congratulating the team behind the bid and encourage businesses and onvestors from across the south east, indeed across the world, to take a closer look at a fantastic opportunity that exists in Thurrock and will he work with local education providers to ensure my constituents have the skills needed to take up these fantastic opportunities?"

Mr Raab responded by saying: "I certainly do support and pay tribute to all of those who have made the new Thames Freeport possible with its potential to deliver over 12,000 new jobs.

"I look forward to seeing the local community and the wider community benefit from the tax benefits and the customs zones and we will see how these plans progress and, again, I think it's good news to see the communities in Basildon and Thurrock taking full advantage of the Brexit opportunities."

Afterwards Mr Metcalfe said: "I am pleased the Deputy Primine Minister joined me in celebrating the final approval of the Thames Freeport. It will mean big investment and big opportunities for Thurrock and the surrounding area."
