Borough's civic heroes take the limelight on a special night

A SPECTACULAR night at Thurrock Civic Hall saw eight worthy winners of top awards in the borough's civic awards, sponsored by Rockfire Capital Limited.

The winners were:

Mayor's award for Lifetime Achievement, sponsored by NewRiverREIT is Julie Carter

Healthy Living award, sponsored by AmazonUK is Wendy Barnard

Sporting Achievement award, sponsored by ImpulseThurrock is Lilie Copperthwaite

Business in the Community award, sponsored by BangtheTable is David Ridler and Andy Rimmel – 1 Big Storage Solutions

Young Achiever award, sponsored by H. W. Wilson ltd is Francesca McEwen

Environmental Champion award, sponsored by GlasdonUK is David Green

Creative Excellence award, sponsored by Port of Tilbury is Les Morgan

Stronger Together Community award, sponsored by Stronger Together Thurrock is Aveley Village Community Foundation.

During the ceremony special acknowledgements were also made to Thurrock's long service volunteers and the three organisations who were winners of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Services (QACVS) last year.

Cllr Deb Huelin, Cabinet Member for Central Services and Communities, said: "The Civic Awards celebrate our fantastic local stars who go above and beyond to help and support our communities. It was a wonderful evening and such a pleasure to meet so many people and hear their stories and commitment to Thurrock. Congratulations to all finalists and winners.

"I would like to thank our sponsors who made the evening possible, all of which are organisations and businesses located in or connected to Thurrock. In total more than £500 was raised for the Mayor's charity, Giving for Thurrock (GiFT), with raffle prizes donated by local businesses."

East Tilbury councillor Fraser Massey paid tribute to two winners from his wards, saying: " Congratulations are in order for the area with two winners.

"David Green won the Environmental Champion award for his ongoing work at the green areas around East Tilbury. The work he has done is amazing and look forward to congratulating him in person.

"1 Big Storage Solutions won the Business in the Community award. Recognition for their work revitalising the former Bata Shoe Company factory. They have done a lot locally just one example was the help they gave to the Bata Heritage Centre after the library fire.

"Well done to the winners, two out of the eight awards went to this area, which is a great achievement!"
