LIGHTNING struck a home in Corringham in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, 18 June) setting fire to the roof.

The occupants, a couple, and their six cats and dogs, escaped unharmed but the blaze caused significant damage.

The dramatic incident happened around 3.30am at the home in York Avenue, with firefighters from Corringham, Orsett, Basildon and Grays attending

They found smoke billowing from the roof, which was completely alight.

The roof was severely damaged by fire.

Watch Manager Geoff Wheal said: "The couple were woken by a massive bang and then heard neighbours knocking on their door.

"Thanks to the neighbours, the couple along with their pets got out safely.

"Crews worked incredibly hard to extinguish the fire. Although the roof and first floor bedrooms were badly damaged, they managed to stop the fire from spreading to the ground floor and save the property."

The fire was fully extinguished by 5.06am.
