CONSERVATIVE councillors in Thurrock are calling for the creation of a new forest to mitigate the possible impact of the proposed Lower Thames Crossing route through the borough.

South Ockendon councillor Andrew Jefferies is leading the conversation, asking Highways England to plant a million trees between South Ockendon and the new road.

Cllr Jefferies, who is also portfolio holder for the environment and air quality), said: "We sincerely hope that this road is never built. However, if it is then South Ockendon needs protecting, it needs a new set of lungs."

"A new forest from Buckles Lane to the M25 will give South Ockendon protection from the polluted air from the LTC, with the new Country Park being built alongside the M25 and Davy Down protecting residents from the A13. Instead of being in a triangle of poor air quality we will be in the triangle of trees and wildlife."

"If this road is to go ahead then South Ockendon needs to get its fair share of mitigation as is happening elsewhere." 

Cllr Mark Coxshall (Deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration), said: "Cllr Jefferies has been a strong champion for protecting air quality in communities like South Ockendon. I truly hope we are close to achieving a new forest for Thurrock which future generations will benefit from." 

"This Conservative administration has been clear that local residents do not want the proposed Lower Thames Crossing road to go forwards, however, if we are not able to stop the crossing in its current form, there must be adequate protections in place for our health and wellbeing. This new forest is a perfect example of the protections residents need!" 

Cllr Jefferies, along with colleagues from Ockendon and Belhus wards (Cllrs Luke Spillman, Paul Arnold, Georgette Polley and George Coxshall), will be meeting with Highways England and council officers to stress the need for this new Woodland.
