VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help out at a newly created nature reserve in Thurrock.

Essex Wildlife Trust is hoping people will come along on Wednesdays to join work parties at Oliver Road Lagoons in West Thurrock.

The Lagoons are a 40-hectare sized home to a myriad of wildlife species – including the incredibly rare Distinguished jumping spider.

The site, formerly a power station, contains Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), which has been extremely beneficial for wildlife, creating a mosaic of wildflower-rich habitats, leading to over 1,300 different species of invertebrates, bird and reptiles, of which around 50 species are classified as endangered, making this site their home.

Meeting weekly the work parties run from 10am- 4pm every Wednesday.

"No experience is necessary but enthusiasm is essential," says the Trust.

All equipment is provided but volunteers are advised to wear appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and take thick gardening gloves if they have them.

Volunteers will also need to take all food and drink needed for the day.

The site is exposed and volunteers will need to come prepared for the weather that day. There are no bathroom or running water facilities on site.

For more information email [email protected] or telephone 01621 862 940.

The Lagoons, also known as West Thurrock Marshes, are at Oliver Road, West Thurrock, RM20 3AL.
