THURROCK Council is calling on the borough's smokers to quit for 'Stoptober' and join the 2.3 million others who have made a quit attempt since it launched in 2012.

Cllr Allen Mayes, Cabinet Member for Health, said: "Smoking remains one of the leading causes of premature death. Smoking is also a significant health issue here in Thurrock where around 680 people die prematurely from smoking every year.

"There is plenty of help available for those that want to stop smoking. They will soon see health benefits after stopping and will certainly notice the extra money they have in their pockets when they stop having to pay out for expensive cigarettes.

"Stoptober is the perfect opportunity to kick the addiction, quitting is one of the best things a smoker can do for their health."

There is more information about how to get help to stop smoking through the Thurrock Healthy Lifestyles Service.
