Campaigners picket Post Office in bid to impress bosses about the local need - but officials put off visit

CAMPAIGNERS gathered outside Corringham's Post Office on St John's Way this morning (Monday, 6 February) to show the community's determination to keep the service in the town.

The current Post Office is set to close later this month following the retirement of the current postmaster. No replacement has been found and the viability of the Post Office at its current site is in doubt because of its size.

Thurrock Nub News understands that an offer has been made to set up a new Post Office within the town centre, transferring to a smaller shop, but campaigners say the Post Office has thrown a spanner into making that plan work by wanting to charge a sizeable fee to move machinery and IT.

Today's visit was supposed to be an opportunity for local people to meet with managers and express opinions, while the management visitors could also take a look first hand at the necessity of a branch in the town.

However, due to 'a meeting' which might be related to the future of the site, campaigners were told the visit had been put back to tomorrow afternoon.

The Post Office has been contacted for an update on the situation.
