CAMPAIGNING residents clapped and cheered from the public gallery as a leading councillor announced he was removing plans for new homes on an open space in South Ockendon from a consultation process.

Residents have been opposing the proposals on a list provided by council regeneration officers for prospective new build sites across the borough.

At tonight's (Wednesday, 26 February) full council meeting Labour ward council member Mike Fletcher quizzed portfolio holder Cllr Barry Johnson about what consideration had been given to infrastructure requirements including school places, medical facilities and shops.

Cllr Johnson responded by repeating an oft-quoted mantra that the list was not a planning application, but a consultation on ideas and that infrastructure requirements would be considered when a planning application was put forward.

However, he then brought smiles to the gallery by saying: "With regards to Callan Grove I have had several meetings, I have seen how this site is a well-used site and I can announce tonight that this site will not be considered for housing development."

When the cheers died down, Cllr Fletcher commented: "Cllr Johnson, I think I love you!"
