Celebration across the ages

By Nub News Reporter 8th May 2025

VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations and celebrations were united across the ages in the villages of Orsett and Horndon on the Hill today (Thursday, 8 May).

In Orsett pupils from the village primary school joined adults at a short service at the village war memorial organised by Chadwell branch of the Royal British Legion.

Helpers served up VE Day treats in Horndon.

And in neighbouring Horndon villagers came together for a VE day afternoon tea and singalong at the Methodist Hall.

A party was held in the Horndon on the Hill Methodist Church Hall.

A lot of residents came to enjoy entertainment by Paul and from Alan, Helen and Elaine.

There were 'sing alongs', a VE Quiz, lots of buffet food including jam sandwiches which were a staple of the war time parties, lots of flag-waving, coffee, teas and stories from those who served in WW2 as well as those who were in London for the 1st VE Day.

At 12 noon those taking part joined with the nation for an Act of Remembrance and silence.
