Veteran Jim laid first wreath at VE Day service of remembrance
A SERVICE of remembrance encapsulated the solemn part of the VE Day commemoration at Grays war memorial this morning (Thursday, 8 May).
It was organised by Grays Thurrock branch of the Royal British Legion and led by its chairman, Rod Oakley. Prayers were said by Rev David Paterson.
The first wreath was laid by 99-year-old Grays resident Jim Gooding, President of the town's RAF Association branch - who was a rear gunner in the war and flew missions over occupied Europe in the final year of the conflict.
Mayor Cllr Kairen Raper, Borough MP Jen Craft and borough council leader Cllr John Kent laid wreaths as did others including youngsters from Woodside School.
Dave Honeywell, musical director of Grays Town Band, played the Last Post, Reveille and the national anthem
