Centenarian Gwen's latest birthday is highlight of a wonderful event

A CELEBRATION to mark the 101st birthday of Gwen Lewis was the highlight of Re-engage Thurrock's party to mark VE Day at the weekend.
The 100th birthday of Gwen, from Corringham, was celebrated in style last year with a message from the King and there were smiles all round this year as friends joined her at the Re-engage afternoon tea held at Stifford Clays Club.
Jen Craft, MP for Thurrock joined the celebrations.
Re-engage is a charity that supports and helps older, vulnerable or lonely people by arranging social events – and it was determined not to miss out on marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Local co-ordinator Loraine Coleman said: "Re-engage Thurrock had the most amazing VE Day Celebration tea party with our guests and volunteers.
"A very big thank you to Peter Wiffen and HW Wilson Ltd for their very generous donation to our tea party and to Julia from Stifford Clays Social Club for donating the use of their hall where fabulous entertainment was put on by Pam Oliver and her Music Monday Friends, Richard, Bill Gary and George.
"Our delicious tea was catered for by Annette at Delivereat and a big thank you to Maggie for helping organise the tea party.
"We celebrated six birthdays one including that of Gwen. How wonderful is that?
"The biggest thank you goes to all our wonderful volunteers who without their dedication and support these very special events could not take place. We welcomed three new volunteers, Suzanne, Margaret and Jamie.
"So much happiness, laughter, dancing, flag waving singing and enjoyment of each other's company. Lots of memories were made today. Sending you all much love and beautiful wishes for a wonderful summer."
Gwen's 100th celebration last year included a ride with local police officers:
