Clive Banbury - a borough legend and much-loved character has passed away

TRIBUTES have been paid by friends, former colleagues and local sportsmen and women, particularly from Thurrock Rugby Club, after the death was announced of the former borough chief engineer Clive Banbury.

Clive, 81, passed away at his long time home in North Stifford recently.

A tribute site has been set up which also has details of his funeral which will take place on Wednesday, 11 November.

Clive was born in Shepherds Bush in 1939 and in his early years was a keen footballer, playing for Bristol Rovers and and Corinthian Casuals among others.

In 1963 he was married to Carol, (who passed away in 2003) and moved to Orsett after taking up a post with Thurrock Council and he quickly made an association with Grays Athletic football club where he also played.

On his retirement from football in 1973 he joined Thurrock Rugby Club, an association that remained until his death and he was a much-loved and respected member of the club.

He quickly settled into his position in the front row and captained the fifth team for a few seasons.

He became the team secretary managing the selection of seven teams the club was running at that team.

He later became the match secretary. Donations to the club in lieu of flowers can be made via this link.

Clive was a Rotarian of longstanding and the Rotary movement was also a huge part of his life and within it he made friendships.

He retired from the council in 1991.

Clive is survived by two daughters, Debbie and Fran - (having lost daughter Joanne in 2009)

- and five grandchildren.

Among those who have paid tribute is Thurrock Ladies stalwart and England international Mercedes Foy who said: "I will miss Clive and that beaming smile.

"Thank you Clive for everything you did in supporting me personally and the T-Birds over the years. Thurrock Rugby Club will truly miss you."
