Come From Away at the Thameside promises innovation and high entertainment that will have you in a spin

By Nub News Reporter 28th Sep 2025

THERE'S just a dozen days now until one of the most ambitious productions put on by a local company takes to the stage at Thurrock's Thameside Theatre.

In the wake of their hugely-praised performance of Calendar Girls earlier this year, Thurrock's TOPS musical society is one of the first theatre companies in the UK to be given the performing rights to stage 'Come From Away', the winner of four Olivier Awards.

The show tells the real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these 'come from aways' into their lives with open hearts.

Experience this joyous story and soaring music as spirited locals and global passengers come together to forge friendships that will stay with them forever.

The first female American Airlines captain, the quick-thinking town mayor, the mother of a New York firefighter and the eager local news reporter are among the many real characters caught at the start of the moment that changed the course of history and whose stories became a true celebration of hope, humanity and unity.

Learn more about Come From Away: Director Luke Coldham and musical director Clare Benson talk about the show.

The production in Thurrock is directed by local actor, producer and acclaimed theatrical dame Luke Coldham who has built up a stunning reputation for previous shows he has directed at the Thameside and neighbouring Basildon Towngate Theatres and he is excited over his latest project which will include more of the imaginative innovations and attention to detail he has become renowned for.

The production includes the Thameside's first revolving stage!

Luke says: "I cannot recommend this show enough! I've literally poured my heart and soul into this and would value all your support to everyone who can make it.

"It has a stellar cast, beautiful music, incredible sets and technical aspects. This is definitely not to be missed. The first time this show has ever been performed in Essex and everything possible has been thrown at it to make this an unforgettable theatrical experience, so don't delay!"

There are four performances of the show, starting on Thursday, 9 October (7.30pm) and two others at the same time on Friday and Saturday, with a Saturday matinee at 1.30pm.
