TILBURY councillor John Allen is organising a community litter pick in alleyways in the town this coming weekend.

Over recent weeks Cllr Allen has organised several clean-ups, including a recent purge of the litter in alleys around Chaucer Close and Bryanston Road.

Thurrock Council has been supporting the picks by taking away rubbish that is bagged and left at a specified but because of financial cutbacks they will no longer take away large objects such as fridges or mattresses.

That means they are still being left 'in-situ' as our film to the rear of Chaucer Road and Bryanton Road shows.

A similar issue arose in Grays where members of the Orchards Community forum regularly hold litter picks.

They too dragged large items to the roadside for the council to take away but when that stopped because of the cutbacks, the Riverside Community Big Local charity stepped in to fund collections.

Anyone wishing to join in the Tilbury pick can contact Cllr Allen via Facebook, where he says: "I'm planning on litter picking part of The Manorway, Hobart Road, close to the alleyway through to North View Avenue this coming Saturday, 15 April,

"If anyone would like to help for an hour at 11am until midday please message me. I have litter pickers, bags and holders available,"

The latest litter pick in Grays took place in the Salisbury Road area over the weekend.

Large items of rubbish are taken away thanks to funding from Grays-based charity.
