THE killer of Thurrock student Henry Nowak will return to court in little over a month to contest his conviction for murder and plead his case for a shorter prison sentence.

Vickrum Digwa was ordered to serve at least 21 years behind bars after fatally stabbing 18-year-old Henry on Wednesday, 3 December last year. The teenager from Chafford Hundred, was a university student in Southampton, where his death occurred.

In contrast to Digwa's claim to reduce his sentence, a counterclaim has been lodged at the Court of Appeal by Solicitor General Ellie Reeves, who believes the sentence is 'unduly lenient'. Both appeals will be heard in the same court on the same day – Thursday, 5 November.

Ms Reeves said she hoped the referral will help to bring justice to Henry's family. However, they now face a day of double jeopardy.

Digwa has also applied to appeal against his conviction for murder, which will be decided separately. A decision is yet to be made on whether to allow that challenge to go ahead.

Henry's murder sparked protests and violence after police body-worn video was released showing officers handcuffing the teenager moments before he collapsed and became unconscious. Digwa had lied to police after the stabbing, claiming that he was the victim of a racist attack.

There have been a number of events through the past year to mark and celebrate Henry's life, including a memorial football match and a fun run in Grays.

The unveiling of a memorial bench at Henry's former school, Harris Academy Secondary. on Mayflower Road, Chafford Hundred, will take place next month.
