AFTER a day of no comment about the considerable flooding in Stanford-le-Hope that left local ward councillors floundering to give out information, Thurrock Council finally made an official announcement this evening at 8.45pm, advising local people to avoid flooded roads and pathways.

Council leader Cllr Rob Gledhill, said: "While no one should be going out unless it is absolutely essential I would urge those that have to travel to make sure that they avoid the areas affected by flooding as much as possible and under no circumstances drive or walk into standing water.

"Our highways team has been working extremely hard today and has done an excellent job battling to clear affected roads and protect homes and residents.

"We could see more adverse weather and poor conditions tomorrow so it is vital everyone takes care and does not find themselves in real difficulty because they have made a reckless decision when confronted with flood water."

Meanwhile, in a bid to help trapped workers on the Stanhope Industrial estate at the end of Wharf Road be able to leave the council said: "A large pump has been delivered to Wharf Road and is already at work removing water from the roadway and heavy plant is on site building a bund to stop the flow of water from the field."
