JUST days after Thurrock Nub News highlighted the shocking state of a Grays cemetery, Thurrock Council has announced it has taken action to tidy up the extensive grounds of the graveyard.

In a story highlighting issues around council 'cleaning and greening' on Sunday, 26 July, Thurrock Nub News drew attention to the shocking state of Grays New Cemetery off Chadwell Road.

Pictures were sent to the council, along with questions about the cemetery's maintenance.

Nub News raised the issue of Grays New Cemetery last month.

Today (Friday, 7 August) the council has issued a release, saying it has now taken action.

It reads: "Thurrock Council is undertaking extensive grass cutting and ground maintenance throughout Grays New Cemetery, helping to improve the appearance of the site and ensure it remains a respectful place for remembrance.

"The work forms part of Thurrock Council's wider commitment to improving public spaces and restoring civic pride across the borough.

"Grays New Cemetery is an important community asset, providing a peaceful setting for residents visiting the graves of loved ones. The improvements will help enhance the environment for visitors while maintaining the dignity and respect the site deserves."

Council leader Cllr Richard Bingley added: "I'd like to thank our Clean & Green team for the excellent work they are carrying out at Grays New Cemetery.

"We recognise that it is a historic and deeply important place for the families and friends of those laid to rest there, and they take great pride in carrying out their work with the utmost care and respect.

"The team are making a real difference to the appearance of the cemetery, creating a cleaner, tidier and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

"Looking after important community spaces such as our cemeteries is a key part of restoring civic pride across Thurrock. Everyone deserves to visit a cemetery that is well maintained, respectful and cared for, and we remain committed to improving the places that matter most to our communities."
